Description
Polypogon maritimus (also called Maritime Beardgrass, among many other common names) is an annual grass native to the Mediterranean region and Middle East. It has narrow, flat leaves and grows in moist, sunny areas such as meadows, roadsides, and disturbed sites.
Uses & Benefits
Polypogon maritimus is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks, and its leaves can be used as a medicinal herb.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Polypogon maritimus has small, yellow flowers with a single pistil and a single stamen. Its seeds are small and black, and its seedlings are slender and have small, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Polypogon maritimus is a perennial grass that can be propagated by seed. It prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soils. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and can be grown in both acidic and alkaline soils. It can be propagated by division in early spring or by seed in late summer. It is important to keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season. Deadheading spent flowers will help to promote additional blooms.
