Description
Strophanthus wallichii (also called Strophanthus, among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It is found in cloud forests at elevations of 1,500–2,400 m. It is a small epiphyte with a creeping rhizome, and long, thin, wiry roots.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Strophanthus wallichii is white, with a long, curved nectar spur. The seed is a flat, oval-shaped capsule. The seedlings are small, with two cotyledons and a long hypocotyl.
Cultivation and Propagation
Strophanthus wallichii can be propagated by seed. The seeds should be sown in a well-drained, sandy soil mix and kept moist. The seedlings should be transplanted when they are large enough to handle. It can also be propagated by cuttings. Cuttings should be taken from the tips of the stems and rooted in a moist, sandy soil mix. Once the cuttings have rooted, they can be transplanted into individual pots.
