Matelea tinctoria (also called Dye Matelea, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Central America and Mexico. It grows in moist, shady areas such as tropical and subtropical forests.

The flower of Matelea tinctoria is a white or pale yellow corolla, with five petals and five sepals. The seed is a small, dark brown, flattened, and oval-shaped. The seedling has a single, long, thin cotyledon and a pair of opposite, simple leaves.
