Description
Angadenia berteroi (also called Bertero's angadenia, among many other common names) is a shrub or small tree, native to South America. It has a rounded crown and grows up to 10 m tall. Its leaves are alternate, ovate-lanceolate, with a serrated margin. It is found in the understory of tropical rainforest and in open areas.
Uses & Benefits
Angadenia berteroi is used in traditional medicine for treating fever, rheumatism, and skin diseases. It is also used as a food preservative and as an insect repellent.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Angadenia berteroi has small white flowers with five petals and yellow anthers. The seeds are small, round and black. The seedlings are thin and have two cotyledons.
Cultivation and Propagation
Angadenia berteroi can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division can be done in spring or autumn. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
Where to Find Angadenia berteroi
Angadenia berteroi can be found in the tropical forests of Central and South America.
