A press release made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Turkey, reads as follows:
“There is a need to make a press release regarding onion production (in Turkey) and market supply in our country. According to the last ten-year averages, 2 million and 100 thousand tons of dry onions were produced annually in our country and the production of dry onions in 2022 was realized as 2 million and 350 thousand tons.”
According to the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, the amount of domestic use in the 2021/2022 marketing year is 2.87 million tons and our sufficiency rate is 114.7 percent. Considering this data, it is seen that dry onion production is realized at a level to meet our needs. The land we have and the changing climate characteristics in our different geographical regions allow us to plant in one region of our country while harvesting in another region. Thus, the food needs of our people are met uninterruptedly.
While the dried onions harvested and stored in 2022 continue to be consumed throughout the year, the first harvests for the new production season have also started in the southern regions of Turkey. In this context, there is ongoing harvest of onions in Adana and Hatay provinces as of April. In this period we are in, there is a higher yield than last year.
The production of 272 thousand tons of onions in Adana and Hatay provinces in 2022 is expected to increase to 284 thousand tons this year. The total amount produced with the new harvests and starting to come to our tables is at a level that will more than meet the needs of our people.
