News summary: Spain imported melons from Morocco at a higher rate than from other sub-tropical sources.
Spanish companies paid more for melons arriving from Morocco compared to Brazil and Senegal.
And Moroccan companies boast about this situation despite the fact that Morocco appears as the third largest international supplier of melon to Spanish importers.
Spain imported during 2022 almost 80,000 tons of melon for a price of more than 65 million euros, which meant an average price of 0.82 euros per kilogram.

Brazil is the most important international supplier of melon to Spain with more than 56,000 tons at an average price of 0.8 euros per kilogram.
Senegal is in second place with almost 12,000 tons at an average price of 0.67 euros per kilogram and a value of just over eight million euros.
The highest price paid was to those with Moroccan origin, since the 8,000 tons purchased by Spanish companies from Moroccan operators were settled above the euro.
This situation has been enough for Moroccan companies to assure that “Spain values better the melons produced in Morocco for the quality of its production and an unmatched know-how.”
