Tanzania clove or karafuu in Swahili is the produce of Syzygium aromaticum. It is the flowers that are most important as their buds dry up and produce spices that have been traded for a very long time. The plant grows lushly in Zanzibar where it is native. Omani Arabs established Sultanates in these islands on the Indian Ocean in the past centuries primarily for the spice trade. Since 1850, Zanzibar has retained the lucrative nature of the cherished produce.
In appearance, the clove tree is evergreen and substantially tall at 8 meters and above. Its leaves are huge and broad and produce clusters of bright red flowers in yellow buds. Their uses include medicine to cure a toothache, making traditional cigars and as spices to give meals flavor. These qualities come from the bioactive compound, eugenol.
The origin of the Tanzania clove was Indonesia although archaeological dig outs found that the plant already existed in Syria 3700 years ago. Zanzibar may have grown its first plant in the late 1700s. This was when a French trader pilfered seeds of what many consider the world’s oldest living tree (now 400 years old) from the Spice Islands and sowed them in the islands. For a while, Zanzibar became the biggest source of this spice before south Asia countries took the crown in later years.
The clove is a nutritious spice with perhaps a bigger share of dietary fiber at 136 percent per serving than most other spices. It also freely dishes out energy with its 22 percent margin of carbohydrates worth of the daily value. The concentration of iron stands at 65 percent of the daily needs, essential for transporting the oxygen part of blood. Vitamin B-6, a key nutrient in the metabolism function of the body is present at 20 percent per serving. Magnesium and calcium, both bone- and teeth-strengthening minerals represent 64 and 63 percent of their daily values respectively. We harvest Tanzania cloves when the flowers have turned from green to a pinkish-red tinge. We also look for blossoms with dimensions of at least 1.5 centimeters in length. Our trained workers pick each flower with its decorative petals and keep it in the basket.
The next step is to dry Tanzania clove flowers in rows over upraised wire mesh. This reduces the calyces into hardened, dried up pieces. They change color to a brownish red. They also alter their shapes to that of a nail, which is essentially the reason they got the Latin name ‘Clavus,’ which means nail. We then grade the Tanzania cloves depending on their floating nature on water and appearance. In terms of appearance, the highest quality has sufficient oil deposits apparent in their stalk-free, wholesome, hardened forms. Any broken, stalk-containing or highly woody piece is discarded. The first grade usually sinks or keeps vertically afloat in a water test. The second grade of the produce does not sink and keeps afloat horizontally.
We pack Tanzania cloves in jute bags weighing 50 to 65 kilograms net weight. We also have bales and boxes of 75 kilograms. Our other containers are bast mats or gunny bags of 75 kilograms. We label the name of the produce, condition (dried), its net weight and the country of origin.

We maintain the same temperatures of at least 5 degrees Celsius when transporting the cargo to the airport in Dar-es-Salaam using our custom vehicles.
