Rwanda coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is a good-smelling spice that has remained popular for ages. Its other common names include Cilantro and dhania. It helps to give flavor to meals when used in leaf form. The seeds also give stews extra aroma as additives. It thrives best in relatively dry areas. It has origins in the Mediterranean region and Greece.
Eating coriander provides the body with at least 45 percent of vitamin C content, which is good for preventing diseases. There is also a vitamin A margin of 5 percent for every quarter of a cup served. There is very little fat and absolutely no cholesterol, which makes for good heart health. The leaves also help to fight indigestion, overcome skin swelling, give relief to diarrhea and cure anemia.
We source Rwanda coriander from the drier parts of the nation. Our family growers in these parts own less than two acres of land. They manage the household farms with farmyard manure and dispense with chemical sprays. This helps make the produce to harbor low residual levels below the standard 0.01 percent.
We harvest Rwanda coriander either as leaves or seeds. We begin with the tender leaves when they are at their greenest and are of mature size. Our workers cut them at the stalk ends and redo the process after a couple of days. We begin the seed harvest after the plant has passed maturity and it is just about to wilt away. We cut the heads holding the seeds in bunches by the use of sharp scissors. We transfer the heads to a drying area enclosed in soft polythene. A couple of days later, the seeds are collectible freely dispensed inside the wrapping paper.
We sort coriander based on the size of the leaf, the richness of the green color and blemish-free appearance. We remove any discolored, immature or rotten foliage and also cut off unnecessary stalks. We also wash the leaves in purified water to keep them free of contaminants. We grade them based on the superior qualities of the size of the leaves, the healthy appearance and maturity. We keep the threshed seeds in airtight containers to prevent the formation of foul air.
We pack Rwanda coriander in leaf bunches of 12 leaves. There are also 24 leaves per bunch for the smaller foliage. We put the bundles in telescopic cartons that are lined up with polyethylene for temperature control. We also use clamshell to wrap up the leaves before we place them in the cartons. Our warehouse assistant then sticks self-adhesive labels of the name of the produce, the date of packing, the net weight and the country of origin.
We store Rwanda coriander at the minimum temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. This temperature prevents the formation of dark stains on the leaves that are an outcome of rot. It also helps to keep the produce for at least three weeks while it is still fresh.
We transport Rwanda coriander using special vehicles with refrigerated interiors. The cargo reaches the destination from Kigali International Airport in the next one to two days.
