Chives are a close relative to onions and garlic. Chives are believed to have originated from Siberia, china or Greece, its scientific name is allium schoenoprasum. They are hardy plants, drought resistant perennials,  growing up to 10-12 inches tall. They grow like grass and in clumps from underground bulbs and produce round, hollow leaves that are much finer than onions.

Climatic Conditions for Kenya chive growth

Chives prefer full sunshine and also do well in a variety of soils but perform best in soils which are high in organic matter with optimum growth temperatures of 16-21 degrees Celsius. Commonly, chives are propagated by dividing the clumps and planting the same. They can also be grown from seeds sown in spring, which are always slow in growth. Plant spacing is always about 20 cm apart and harvesting period is 90 days after planting. Harvesting is done by cutting the leaves ½ inches above the soil line to leave enough leaves for the next sprout.

Benefits of Kenya chives

Cancer: Studies have shown that chives have a preventive effect on cancer due to the presence of organosulfur compounds which inhibit tumor growth and mutagenesis and also prevent free radical formation. Research shows that men with high intake of allium vegetables had a lower risk of prostate cancer.

Sleep and mood: The Choline element found in chives is helpful for lack of sleep problems, muscle movement, learning and memory. Folate also helps with depression by preventing excess of homocysteinefrom forming in the body. Choline also helps in maintaining of nerve impulses, absorption of fats and reduces chronic inflammations.

Improved heart health: Chives contain quercetin which reduces the risk of plaque buildup in arteries. Studies have shown that people who follow a diet of high flavonoids such as quercetin have lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure levels. Allicin found in chives help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Bone health: Vitamin K in chives is good for long term bone health. It also assists in regulation of cells that help prevent bone demineralization, and helps in the formation of bone protein called osteocacin, which is good for ensuring good bone density.

Nutrients: Chives contains a host of other nutrients important for overall healthy living like, iron, potassium, vitamins A and C, folate, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin.

Choosing the best Kenya chives

Look for those that have healthy green leaves with no signs of yellow or brown. Use chives fresh from the garden or market. If storing is a must put them in a bag in the vegetable bin inside the refrigerator. But do not store for so long as vegetables lose their taste and color when stored for so long. The chive flowers are also used in cooking as they add color to the food, making it look really delicious.
