Leather is used in the production of shoes, gloves and leather goods and garments such as bags.

There are 34 tanneries in Ethiopia which facilitates the production of leather from hides and skin. The private sector owns all the tanneries in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is endowed with abundant livestock resources. 

Ethiopia produces high-quality leather, which is used as a raw material in shoe manufacturing. About 24 million pairs of shoes are produced both for the local and the export market from leather and non-leather products. 3.75 million pairs of shoes are exported to the international market,95% is from leather. In 2017, the industry had yielded $35.45 million. The industry has employed over 10,000 workers, most of whom are the youth.

 Ethiopia leather is obtained from hides and skins. Hides are categorized based on the age and weight of the animals.

Hides are categorized based on the weight of the animals. Adult animals hide are categorized in three ways , that is,  light, medium and heavy .light hides are from young heifers weighing between 6-11 kg in green state .medium hides weigh between 6-11 kg and heavy hides weigh between 11-17kg in the green state. Bulls weigh more than 17 kg. Sheepskin is categorized into hairy and wool type. Goatskin is highly valued as raw materials in the production of superior quality leather. These hides and skin produce leather used in the shoe, glove and leather garments industries

Ethiopia is located in the horn of Africa between 3-5 degrees north latitude and 33-48 degrees east longitude. The climatic conditions of the country vary from dry, tropical and temperate rainy. These climatic conditions favor the existence of livestock in the different areas in the country.

  The production of Ethiopia leather is done in the ternary where hides and skins are converted to leather. After slaughtering, hides and skins are taken to the tanneries for the production process.

The average soaking capacity is 107,850 pieces of sheepskin, 51550 pieces of goatskin and 9800 pieces of hiding. Collectors of raw hides and skin are found in almost all towns of Ethiopia. Tanneries state that only 10-15 %of hides and skins qualify for the top grades and because of this, the hides and skin are not exported in their raw form but manufactured to produce leather used in the production of shoes, gloves and leather garments. 

The shoe industry yield 24 million pairs with 95% from leather. When the products are ready, they are exported to their designated markets. China, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom are the highest consumers of leather products from Ethiopia.
