The main logging areas in DRC are; Orintale, Equateur, Bandundu Former provinces and along the Congo River. Most of the forest companies are in the hands of foreigners (WRI atlas DRC).

The main export destination of Aucoumea klaineana from DRC is China and Europe.

There are several varieties of wood in DRC. The main species include;

  • Afrormosia(Pericopsis elata)- Exploited in the Equateur Province.

DRC is along the tropics in West Africa. The climatic conditions of the country area are hot and humid in the river basins. It is cool and dry in the southern highlands and very cold in the mountains. The rainy season lasts from October to June in the south and April to November in the north. The climatic conditions of the country favour the growth of Aucoumea klaineana.

Aucoumea klaineana is harvested throughout the year. The country has few domestic processing industries. There are only 15 sawmills around Kinshasa, Mbandaka and Kisangani and one plywood milling in Kinshasa.

The main threat to forestry in DRC is deforestation by slash and burn, bushfires, cattle ranching, and charcoal production for local and regional markets.

The wood from the interior of the country is transported to the port of Matadi by railway. They also transport by roads linked to the bypass of Stanley Falls on the river below Kinshasa.
