Tunisia sloes are a product of the blackthorn with dark purple leaves and make an excellent aperitif that is mainly used to spice up marinades and stews. Sloes make great wine and snaps.
Blackthorn is native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. During the past centuries, the sloes initially were used to manufacture sloe wine, whole gins, and locally it was used to cure illnesses and to treat rare cases of arthritis.
Tunisia sloes are not only consumed as a fruit, but a significant faction used to manufacture snaps and wines that are now exported to Europe. It is now a common plant found in the Mediterranean region. Sloe Trees thrive in well-drained moist loam and sandy soils and require abundant sunlight and warm temperatures that are necessarily important for them to produce well. Tunisia’s Mediterranean climate has favoured sloe cultivation in the region with sloes thriving in less waterlogged areas and a subtropical climate. Alkaline soils in some parts of Tunisia have also supported the growth of the plant.
Pruning is carried out before the sloes bloom to guarantee a healthy harvest with irrigation practised during the early stages of cultivation. The farmers in the region use pesticides and spray chemicals to ward off fruit-destroying fungus and worms. During pruning, gloves and eyeglasses are worn to protect the farmers.
Large scale manufacturers harvest sloes during winter, and Sour sloes are a complete great source to make sloe wine. Sloes are harvested drying early winter; however, they are now also collected during summer with little culinary value. Some manufacture dry sloes to extend their eating life.
Sloes are perishable, therefore maintaining fresh quality after harvest is essential. After harvest, they are transported to stores with cold temperatures to retain freshness, quality, and stored in cold temperatures. The shelf life of Tunisia is 24 months. Packaging depends entirely on the varieties and quality of the sloes, as well as customer requirements.
Sloes harvested during winter tend to have a sour taste, therefore commercially, they are used to manufacture sloe wine and snaps. Tunisia exports some if its sloes to Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, offering a great global market.
