Tunisia nectarines are close relatives to Peaches. They have a reddish colour on their outer skin, sweet and flavoured but smaller than a regular peach. On the contrary, the nectarine is a variety of peach.

They are believed to have originated from 2000 years ago and initially cultivated in Greece, Rome, and Persia at the beginning of the 16th century. The Spanish later introduced it to America and Britain. It has high value and market and is now domestically cultivated around the world, including Tunisia. 

The Tunisian vegetable market is the largest thriving economy locally with the production volume of 125,000k metric tonnes annually, Nectarines from Tunisia are noticeable, with a large percentage exported. The Mediterranean Climate has incredibly favoured nectarine cultivation in the region producing many varieties that are not only fleshy sweet but massive as well. 

The most common varieties cultivated are Star born, Royal Giant and Late Fair, to name a few. These have a yellow, orange and reddish colour. Nectarine is exported either fresh, frozen or dried.

Nectarine trees require maintenance and care to produce good fruits. Due to Tunisia ‘s Mediterranean climate, the nectarines thrive in the region. Sunlight is vital and mandatory for massive produce . Tunisia’s location highly receives enough climatic yield high-quality nectarines. The sandy loam soils in the area have equally played the role with a PH of 6ph, nectarines produced are distinct.   

Tunisians have also applied fertilizer of 10-10-10 spreads to add nutrients to the soils. Pesticides and sprays used to ward off insects and fungus that cause weak quality guarantee good yields. Farmers in the region have also avoided cold temperatures and frost during cultivation. 

The fruit turns yellow when ripe. For the safe harvest, the nectarine is hand-picked, washed and stored, and stored in cold, dry temperatures. Special care is even to avoid fruit bruises. After harvest, Nectarines are not immediately refrigerator. They are placed in hydro cooling conditions to slow opening and remove heat.  

During hydro-cooling, nectarines are placed in streams of running water and washed then left to cool off to reduce temperatures and retain the taste. Forced air is also used by applying cold air by the use of fans to cool off the nectarines. They are then packaged in corrugated boxes or trays and shipped for both domestic and foreign consumption. Air-cargo is used to export Nectarines from Tunisia.
