Rwanda lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is a leafy green that is notable for its luxuriant, curly foliage. It is like a cross of cabbage and spinach. In the first comparison, it almost forms a dome-like cabbage but comes short of it, while the curled leaves remind of spinach. There are some forms of the plant that produce edible spikes in raw or fried form especially asparagus lettuce. The primary use of the leaves is to make salads. They also add flavor to soups and sandwiches. The naming of the variations of the plant depends on head formation. Butterhead or Romaine, for example, is almost doomed. The leafy types include leaf lettuce, Bibb/greenhouse, and Crisphead.
Lettuce is native to Egypt where it has grown since the age of the Pharaohs. The Egyptians grew a wild variety of the plant for oil production purposes. By 50 A.D., the Romans and Greeks had served much of Europe with the delicacy. Though once a crop of the West, it now enjoys widespread cultivation all over the world including Rwanda.
The consumption of lettuce serves the body with 148% of the daily value of vitamin A. The vegetable also promotes hemoglobin transportation in the blood due to the 4% margin of iron present. The bone-forming mineral, magnesium is present at 3% per serving. Calcium, which helps to nurture healthy teeth enamel also clocks 3% of the daily needs. The dietary fiber margin stands at 5% in each serving of the vegetable.
We obtain Rwanda lettuce from Gicumbi and other areas of the north of the country. We interact with only family growers who have an average of 1 to 2 acres of land. The locals maintain the land under farmyard manure. They also keep chemical spray application at the minimum.
We harvest Rwanda lettuce from relatively young plants. We look for tender, smooth, four-inch-long selections. We begin by cutting the outer leaves with sharp scissors. This leaves ample room for the inner leaves to sprout again. When dealing with the Romaine cultivar, we usually begin by removing the outer leaves for plants that are not fully grown. If the entire plant is mature, we follow by cutting down the plant at the base to remove all the edible foliage. For all other varieties of lettuce, the use of scissors just a couple of inches from the crown removes the leaves from the plant at a go.
After delivering the harvest to the packing shed, we sort the leaves by size and appearance. We remove any discolored ones from the rest to reduce contamination. We then relay the rest to the parking area.
We pack Rwanda lettuce in 1 1/9th bushel size wooden or plastic boxes. These have a handling capacity for 12 pieces. Our other packages have a holding capacity of 24 pieces in each crate. The variety that fits this packing measure is Crisphead for which we put 24 pieces in each box. We pack Butterhead types by weight measure such that there are 14.5 kilograms of the produce per package. The same applies to the leaf lettuce cultivar which has flexible rules of between 14.5 and 17 kilograms. The Bibb/greenhouse variety comes in the smallest packages of 4.5 kilograms. We stick the appropriate produce labels inclusive of the name/variety, the count, the net weight and the source.
We proceed to store Rwanda lettuce at the low temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. This modified temperature stays put during the transportation phase to Kigali International Airport via our special trucks. We give a grace period of 1 to 2 days for the cargo from Kigali to touch down in your city.
