Rwanda guava (Psidium guajava) is one of the many fruits that thrive naturally in the sub-tropical forests of the land of a thousand hills. It is a warm climate fruit that disfavors cool regions as it is susceptible to chilling injury. Each tree can produce 37 kilos of fruits every 12 months, a mark of its high productivity. Despite the smallness of the tree, it can bear quite large fruits.  The original home of the fruit in Mexico and the Central American regions.

A serving of guava provides the body with 12 percent of the daily value of vitamin A. The vitamin C content is among the highest among fruits at 380 percent of the daily value. This protects the body against diseases. The vitamin B-6 content stands at 5 percent of the daily value. The magnesium content, essential for maintaining the bone structure is 5 percent per serving.  The dietary fiber content is 20 percent of the daily needs which aids in digestion. The potassium margin for maintaining blood electrolytes is 11 percent of the daily value.

We source Rwanda guava from family growers in the warm semi-arid parts of the country. Our sources cultivate an average of 0.5 hectares of land. They maintain their crops with farmyard manure and reduce reliance on chemical sprays. This keeps their crops free of residual matter at less than 0.01 percent.

We pick Rwanda guava once the color changes from the organic green to a yellowish-green for the red or pink cultivars. The surest sign of maturity is the whiff of a scent that comes off the fruit even before the ripening stage. Our workers use pruners to sever the large fruit off the stem with an inch or two of stalk on it.

After delivering the guava harvest by the cartload to the packinghouse, we wash the pieces. We use purified water for the washing before rinsing the fruits. We then spray edible wax on the fruits to prevent premature ripening.

We pack Rwanda guava in flat cartons with a net capacity of 4.5 kilos. We, first of all, wrap the fruits in soft wax sleeves and then put them into cartons. To prevent blackening on some of the sensitive fruits, we carefully select the type of wax to use as this ensures little damage.  Our aerated polyethylene-lined bags provide for alternative packing. These bags which also feature in cartons offer perfect receptacles against fluffiness or the softening of the cargo. We finally attach produce labels inclusive of the name of the produce, the net weight, the packing date and the country of origin.

Our storage parameters for Rwanda guava are between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius. We keep a relative humidity of 80 to 95 percent. This climatic control also features in our refrigerated trucks that convey the cargo to the Kigali International Airport. You can expect the shipment to touch down in your city in a day or two after dispatch.
