Seedless watermelon first came to light in Nebraska, the United States, in the 1940s. Historically, the watermelon originated from Botswana and Namibia on the Kalahari Desert. The dates are not clear but it is certain that about 3000 B.C., the Egyptians marked the first time that the crop underwent harvesting in civilized society as is available through cave engravings and hieroglyphics. In the 1200s A.D., traders from Asia, especially Moors spread the watermelon varieties as they are known today throughout Europe.

Despite their very asexual nature, botanically seedless watermelons still need pollination. One way to do this is to improve their lack of sufficient pollen by introducing another crop that can transfer pollen to the watermelon. One of these is the watermelon variety that has newly come into the market, common as ‘pollenizer.’ Though, most family growers go for the traditional hybrid diploid watermelon that easily pollinates its seedless variety.

Agents of flowering and successful reproduction of Kenya seedless watermelon include honey bees. In most areas where the fruit is grown commercially, farmers around also have beehives for commercial purposes that act as natural pollinators. Using data from the United States, it is a recommendation to have around three beehives for every acreage of land to influence reproduction in these plants.

Growth of watermelon requires temperatures of just below 25 degrees Celsius, which most parts of Kenya are able to meet. Their subtropical nature ensures that they do not get affected much by cool clime diseases like powdery mildew though it still happens when humidity is at its peak.

Kenya seedless watermelons grow from seed and take slightly less than three months (at most 85 days) to be ready for harvest after transplanting. However, it is possible to grow them under hydroponic solutions where they imitate the shape of the glass containers in which they grow. This practice has not caught up in Kenya much but those who use it can fetch more than three times the price of soil-based watermelons.

Seedless watermelon is normally prone to not only pests but diseases, as well as, weeds. As follows

Leaf Spot Anthracnose: this disease turns the leaves brown and instils ugly spots all over the leaves’ surfaces. You can control them by use of approved treatment.
Powdery mildew: this is similar to the above only that it targets the vines along the leaves of the seedless watermelon, leaving behind brown taints. You can use a mild form of Cabrio fungicide to control the disease.
Gummy stem blight: They affect the leaves, leaving them yellowish and some may become strong mutations that are hard to treat. Early detection reduces this blight.
Bacterial fruit blotch: a disease that taints the fruit with dark marks that may appear as grease at first. You can use approved fungicides to control this disease.

The maintenance of Kenya seedless water melon revolves around de-weeding and irrigation. In the drier parts of Kenya, farmers have to battle with weeds that crop up fast as a result of frequent irrigation. It is best to have a fresh sprinkling of water two times a week when there is no rain or just once, especially when the fruit is about to mature.
