Grapes are a fruit from the berry family that grows in tight clusters. It is one of the widely grown fruit crops not only in Egypt but in the whole world. Egypt grapes are considered the second most crucial fruit crop after citrus. Grapes are high in calories, rich in vitamins and minerals, and contain anti-oxidant properties. The Egypt grapes are eaten fresh, used in juice and wine production, make jam, vinegar, and seed oil.
Cultivation of dates began around 6,000 to 8,000 years ago. By the 9th century, Shiraz city was known to produce wine from the grapes they grew. The Greeks and Romans grew grapes for eating and wine production as well. Evidence has shown that Mesopotamians and Ancient Egyptians had vine plantations and winemaking skills. Later on, the fruit spread to regions of Europe, North Africa, and North America eventually.
The fruits grow in clusters of between 15 to 300 single grapes, they have white or purple flesh with a sweet juicy pulp and contain seeds. The outer skin colors; crimson, black, yellow, dark blue, green, pink, and orange, vary according to variety. The size and shape of the Egyptian grapefruit also vary according to type, ranging between 9 to 16 millimeters in diameter. The tree can grow up to 32 meters in height, and the leaves are long and broad at between 5 to 20 centimeters. Each grape variety has its unique taste.
Grapes are grown from Alexandria in the north of Egypt to Aswan in the south of Egypt. Additionally, they are grown in the Nubaria district. The produced export of Egypt in a good season is approximately 100,000 tons. The country ranks at fourth place in the global grapes production volume.
Egypt grapes availability season runs from May to October. They require a temperature above 10°C, adequate sun, water, and heat. Egypt’s Mediterranean climate provides a suitable environment for grapes cultivation. The warm and moist condition and well-draining soil in the places where grapes are grown contribute to the growth of Egypt’s top-quality grapes.
There are various varieties of Egypt grapes. Superior ”white grapes seedless” are one of the early grapes. Their outer skin is green, and it has a sweet flesh with no seeds. This type is available from May to August. Starlight is a new variety being grown in Egypt. Its outer skin is red, and it is a tough grape that withstands shipment. The flame is a seedless grape with brown-red skin color. It is eaten fresh or made into juice since it contains 80% water and is available from May to End-June. Crimson is a seedless, sweet, and meaty late season grape with the red outer skin. This variety can be eaten fresh, put in a salad, or used in juice production. It is available between Mid-August to October. The red globe is the most abundant round berries of all red grapes grown. It is sweet and crunchy with a ruby red exterior skin color and is seedless. It also has a long shelf life and is available between July to September.
Egypt grapes are harvested 1 to 3 weeks after they have turned to their right color. At this time, the fruit is plump, thick, and full of juice. Once picked, the color and sweetness do not change; hence it is important to harvest at the right time when they are at their sweetest before they overdevelop. Grapes are often picked on warm sunny days using sharp garden scissors or pruners. After that, they get packed in a plastic carton bag of 5 kilograms, punned cartons of 5 kilograms, and reefer containers. Grapes are susceptible to changes in temperature hence the need for them to get transported in refrigerated containers with appropriate humidity. Egypt grapes are exported 60 to 72 hours after harvest. Although the majority of the grapes produce is locally consumed, Egypt still exports to countries like Brazil, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
