Popular as mums, Uganda chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum Indicum) is the second most exported flowers after roses from this East African country. The very second half of their botanical name, anthemon, describes the term ‘flower’ in Greek. This places them as among the most recognizable of all everyday blooms. They grow mostly to the south of the nation although they are also available in other parts of the country. From ancient annals, it is clear that the flower was a good blossom. Even poets in China sung of it to the adoration of the ancient world. This is precisely where the chrysanthemums first grew before they expanded to other parts of the world, starting in Asia. Every region in China, for instance, has its variety.
Chrysanthemums in Uganda grow under the cool and wet conditions of the southern, southwestern and victoria lake areas of the country. There are some cultivars under export. These ranges from the Arctic Queen and Arctic Pink/ Orange to the Ibis types: Sunny, Pearl, Marabou and Lime. Extensive fields of Uganda chrysanthemums, both in greenhouses and open conditions compete with tea estates, especially in the southern region. On our part, we transact with family growers who have at most two acres of land and grow the flowers under natural conditions.
We also harvest Uganda chrysanthemums’ leaves for the local resale market where they are popular in dishes. Each leaf contains 37 percent of the daily value of vitamin A, for proper eyesight. Its iron content stands at 12 percent while that of vitamin B-6 is 10 percent. They also possess a potassium value of 16 percent, which is followed by dietary fiber at 12 percent. We harvest Uganda chrysanthemums at dawn on a dry day. This ensures that most of the flowers will be fully bloomed or in half bloom. The former are usually wider in the bud than the latter. We then put the long cut stems into the clean water until they reach the packing shed. Here we go on to strip off the leaves for up to 20 centimeters from the ground level. We then bunch the stems into fives which we keep intact with elastic bands. We then insert them into sleeves.
We export our Uganda chrysanthemums after sorting them into grades. The spray or multi-flowered mums include Gold, Silver as well as Bronze grades. For the Standard mums (the longest), we grade them in such grades as Blue, Green, Red as well as Yellow, based on the color and condition. The stems with a length of between 88 and 100 centimeters from the Standard type of chrysanthemum. They consist of a single flower with about five buds, with a diameter of 60 to 88 millimeters. The Spray standard forms the second grade. It is about 77 to 88 centimeters long and is made up of 10 flowers per bouquet. These can be in half or full bloom conditions. The Dwarf standard constitutes the final category of packing mums: it has the length of 25 to 38 centimeters per stem and constitutes 10 to 12 blossoms, every 30 millimeters across the bud.
We pack the bunched Uganda chrysanthemums in sleeves that are 91 by 43 by 15 centimeters cubic. We also have smaller boxes with the dimensions of 80 by 50 by 23 centimeters cubic. These carry half a dozen mums’ sleeves, with each end having half the flowers. We pack the mums stems under pre-cooled conditions at 1° Celsius. We pre-cool them about two hours before putting them into the boxes. We henceforth keep them at base temperatures of 0° to 3° Celsius which gives them one of the most extended floral vase lives of 3 to 6 weeks.
