Rwanda Craspedia globosa is a temperate environment summer bloom that has origins from Australia. It does well currently even in tropical environments. Its other name is billy button courtesy of the top boll-like bloom that crests its thin spike. This is among the most rustic-looking and yet most distinctive flowers: rustic because of the simple arrangement of flowers on top of a thin, tall spike and distinctive because of the breathtaking uniform arrangement of the florets in their yellow allure. The woolly crest has even earned them the other term of ‘woolly heads.’ They come from the daisy family that is known for delicate blooms and hence the long, slender stems packed closely.

The origin of craspedia was Australia and New Zealand where it is native. It began commercial cultivation in the US as early as 1988. From here it has spread to other lands including Africa. The name comes from the Greek word ‘kraspedon’ which refers to woolly foliage.

We source Rwanda craspedia from mainly flower-growing Eastern Province. The areas provide the conducive 18 to 25 degrees Celsius temperature conditions for the optimal growth of the plant. Our sources usually have less than two acres of land that they cultivate using farmyard manure. We source only blooms that have grown under little or no chemical sprays.

We harvest Rwanda craspedia in a timely and systematic fashion. We do the harvest at dawn to prevent wilting. We go for wooly heads that have yellowed and their small colored florets have opened in full.  We use sharp knives to cut the 60-centimeter or 24-inch stem. This stem, also known as a drumstick then goes into a water solution where it continues to conserve its moisture reserves until the packing phase starts.

We preserve the flowers in a recut form for the temporary duration of its post-harvest handling duration dipped in either water or sucrose solution. This helps maintain inner moisture and give the blooms a vase life of at least a week or two. We grade the flowers by the spread of color, length and the level of maturity.

We pack Rwanda craspedia in bunched or single flower formation. Our bunches consist of 12 to 20 stems that are either fresh or dried. In either case, we enclose the stems in moisture-conserving plastic sleeves to keep them fresh for at least a week or at most two weeks. We enclose each sleeved bunch in a telescopic carton. We finalize the packing phase with the attachment of self-adhesive labels.  They include the source and destination.

We store craspedia at 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. We keep the blooms dipped in water for the entire packing period. We use special trucks to transport the fresh flowers to the airport under modified environment interior conditions. You can expect the packages to reach your destination within 1 or 2 days after dispatch.

If you are searching for a unique flower with large boll-like heads, then Rwanda craspedia from our family sources fits that description. Whether as a pot plant, clustered bouquet or just single packed bloom, you now know who to ask for the flowers. We improve the quality by sourcing the flowers from only Global Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-certified sources. You can also expect them in the correct tonnage as we always keep the seasonal surplus. Besides, our prices are quite low as we suit them to your budget. This is why you should make an order today!
