Mozambique octopus is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusk of the order Octopoda. There are around 300 species that are grouped within the squids class. The octopus has a lifespan of 3-5 years. This is when the octopuses have gotten to the maturity stage for harvesting.
An average octopus will weigh between 1 kg to 5 kgs with the giant pacific octopus weighing up to 50kgs. They are a good source of protein and best enjoyed when deep-fried or roasted.
This ocean creature is famous for its eight arms and bulbous head. One of the oldest fossils belongs to an octopus dated 296 Million years ago during the carboniferous period. The common octopus is mostly found in tropical waters all over the world, in oceans such as the Indian, Pacific, Atlantic, or even in seas such as the Mediterranean.
Octopuses will be found near the water surface, in shells, rock cracks, and reefs. Being carnivorous, the octopus eats small fish, worms, crabs, snails and generally other small sea creatures.
It has no backbone hence its wobbly look. The most common octopus is the giant octopus whose tentacles(arms) are as long as 7meters long.
The interesting fact about this sea creature is that it is a self cannibal and can eat its self and later regrow them.
Mozambique octopuses are widely classified into two groups, yet there are more than 300 species.
- The deep-sea finned octopus
- The finless shallow-water octopus
An average octopus grows up to 16 feet with the giant octopus growing up to 30 feet and weighing over 500 pounds.
The mating season for Mozambique octopus lasts from March to October, with the peak being July, typically males die within months after mating while females with over their eggs until they hatch, then they die after.
By the year 2021, Mozambique is looking to begin domesticating farmed octopuses to boost their productivity. Octopuses thrive best during the spring season.
Octopus are captured for food along the ocean shores. Mozambique has a great Indian Ocean stretch that gives it an advantage over most countries when it comes to Octopus farming. The largest importer of Mozambique octopuses is Europe.
After harvesting, the octopuses are packed in vacuum poly bags of different weights, e.g., 1kg, 2kg, 5kg, and 10kgs. Some are added value by deep-frying then packed in smaller cartoon boxes up to 500grams for export. Labels are provided on the packs. Europe imports Mozambique octopuses worth a total of 250 million Euros annually.
