The islands of Cape Verde are known for ‘big-game’ fishing; which is the type of fishing that involves larger fish like tuna. The Cape Verde tuna are fished for recreational activities like sport fishing, contests as well as for food.

The fishing season in Cape Verde varies moderately throughout the year save for January and February when the winds are strong and may cause difficulty. This to mean that tunas are available throughout. However, the best months to fish the yellowfin tuna is September to December; which make for the autumn and winter seasons of the country. That said, July to November makes for the high fishing season and the low season is January to April. 

Tunas in Cape Verde are mainly fished using the trolling method which gets accomplished by using artificial fish, small fish or squid. In other words, trolling is hauling with lighter material. Also, the traditional fishing rod is used once in a while. 

Cape Verde tunas require cold storage warehousing conditions and are put in reefer containers. There is a pre-trip inspection, and most get exported either frozen, fresh or canned. During shipment, the temperatures for the frozen tuna are -18°c or less or the fish is transported while held in refrigerated brine.
