Description
Aloysia brasiliensis (also called Brazilian Verbena, among many other common names) is a shrub species with a woody stem and lanceolate leaves. It is native to Brazil and is found in humid montane forests at elevations of 800–2000 m.
Uses & Benefits
Aloysia brasiliensis is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a cut flower. It is also used in traditional medicine to treat digestive problems, headaches, and skin conditions.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Aloysia brasiliensis has small, white flowers with yellowish-green sepals and petals. The flowers have a sweet scent and are borne in clusters at the end of the stem. The seed is a small, black, oval seed with a smooth surface. The seedlings are small, dark green, and have a single, pointed leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Aloysia brasiliensis is a fast-growing shrub that can reach up to 4 m in height. It is best grown in full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation is usually done by cuttings or layering. Cuttings should be taken in the spring or summer and should be placed in a moist, well-drained soil mix. Layering can be done by burying a branch of the plant in the soil and allowing it to root. Once the roots have formed, the branch can be cut off and transplanted.
