Description

Pilea fontana (also called Water Pilea, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southeastern United States. It has a woody stem, and its leaves are ovate to lanceolate in shape. It grows in tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests, as well as in disturbed areas.

Uses & Benefits

Pilea fontana is used as an ornamental plant due to its attractive foliage and its ability to tolerate low light conditions. It is also known for its air-purifying properties, removing toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene from the air.

Flower, Seeds and Seedlings

Pilea fontana has small, white flowers that are clustered together in the leaf axils. The seeds are small, black, and round. The seedlings have long, narrow, pointed cotyledons.
