Description
Elatostema polystachyoides (also called Elatostema shuii, among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the Urticaceae family. It is a herbaceous perennial with a creeping habit, and has ovate leaves with toothed margins. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, and is found in moist forests and grasslands.
Uses & Benefits
Elatostema polystachyoides is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a ground cover. It is also used as a medicinal plant to treat skin diseases and wounds.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Elatostema polystachyoides has small, white flowers with five petals and five sepals. The seeds are small, black and oval-shaped. The seedlings are small and have thin, light green leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Elatostema polystachyoides is a low-growing, evergreen perennial that grows in dense patches. It prefers moist, well-drained soils in partial shade. Propagation is usually done by division of the rhizomes or by stem cuttings. It can also be propagated from seed, but this is not recommended as the seedlings are slow to establish.
