Description
Sphagnum alaskense (also called Alaskan Sphagnum, among many other common names) is a species of liverwort in the family Lejeuneaceae. It is found in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. It grows in moist montane forests and on wet rocks.
Uses & Benefits
Sphagnum alaskense is used as a soil conditioner and as an ornamental plant in gardens. It is also used as a food source for some animals.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Sphagnum alaskense has small, yellowish-green flowers that are arranged in a single row along the stem. The seeds are small and dark brown in color. The seedlings are small and have a single, heart-shaped leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Sphagnum alaskense is a small, epiphytic moss that grows on tree bark in moist, shady areas. It is propagated by spores, which are released from the sporophyte. The spores should be sown on moist, sterile soil in a shallow tray and kept in a warm, humid environment. The spores will germinate in about two weeks and the young plants can be transplanted to individual pots when they are large enough.
