Description
Verbascum beryteum (also called Beryte's Mullein, among many other common names) is a biennial herbaceous plant that grows up to 1.5 m in height. It is native to Europe and North Africa, and prefers dry habitats such as grasslands, roadsides and disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Verbascum beryteum is an ornamental plant that is often used in gardens to add color and texture. It is also used medicinally to treat a variety of ailments such as colds, coughs, and skin problems.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Verbascum beryteum has yellow flowers with five petals and a center of yellow stamens. The seeds are small, black and round. The seedlings have oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Verbascum beryteum can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in the spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn is also possible. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
