Description
Melicope robusta (also called 'Kauila', among many other common names) is a small tree or shrub native to the Hawaiian Islands. It has a rounded crown, with a trunk up to 10 cm in diameter. Its leaves are simple, opposite, and oblong-ovate, with a serrated margin. It grows in dry to mesic forests, at elevations of 0-1,000 m.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Melicope robusta has small, yellow-green flowers and small, dark brown seeds. The seedlings have two opposite, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Melicope robusta is a shrub that can be propagated by seed or cuttings. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade. It is drought tolerant and can tolerate temperatures down to -10°F (-23°C). It can be grown in containers or in the ground. To propagate by seed, sow in spring or early summer in a sunny location. To propagate by cuttings, take cuttings in spring or early summer and root them in moist soil.
