Description
Melicope jugosa (also called 'Kauila', among many other common names) is a small tree or shrub native to the Hawaiian Islands. It has a rounded crown, with a trunk up to 10 cm in diameter. Its leaves are simple, opposite, and oblong-ovate, with a serrated margin. It grows in dry to mesic forests, at elevations of 0-1,000 m.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flowers of Melicope jugosa are white and fragrant, with four petals and a yellow center. The seeds are small and black, and the seedlings are thin and delicate.
Cultivation and Propagation
Melicope jugosa can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining soil mix, and kept moist until germination. Cuttings should be taken from healthy, mature plants and rooted in a moist medium. Once established, the plants should be fertilized regularly and kept in a warm, sunny location.
