Description
Rytigynia laurentii (also called 'Laurent's Rytigynia', among many other common names) is a shrub or small tree, up to 8 m tall, with a trunk up to 15 cm in diameter. It is native to tropical Africa and is found in lowland rainforest and secondary forest habitats.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Rytigynia laurentii has small, yellow-green flowers with yellow anthers. The seed is a small, brown, flattened, ovoid nut. The seedlings have a single cotyledon, a short hypocotyl and two small, opposite, simple leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Rytigynia laurentii is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub that can reach a height of up to 2 m. It prefers well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade. Propagation is usually done through seeds or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining soil mix and kept moist until germination. Cuttings should be taken from semi-hardwood and planted in a moist soil mix. Keep the cuttings in a warm, shaded area until they have rooted.
