Description
Notopleura lateriflora (also called Late-flowering Notopleura, among many other common names) is a shrub or small tree, usually up to 6 m tall, with a dense, rounded crown. It is native to the tropical Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, where it grows in wet montane forests and cloud forests at elevations of 1000-3000 m.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flowers of Notopleura lateriflora are small and white, with four petals and yellow centers. The seeds are small, black and oval-shaped. The seedlings are small, with a single pair of leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Notopleura lateriflora is a small evergreen tree that grows up to 8 meters in height. It prefers moist, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of light frosts. Propagation is by seed, which should be sown in spring in a well-drained, light soil mix. The seed should be lightly covered and kept moist until germination occurs. Seedlings should be transplanted when they reach a height of 10-15 cm.
