Description
Manettia irwinii (also called Irwin's Firecracker Vine, among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the coffee family. It is native to Central and South America, where it is found in tropical and subtropical forests. It is a woody, evergreen vine that can reach up to 10 m in length. Its leaves are ovate to lanceolate, and its flowers are tubular and bright red.
Uses & Benefits
Manettia irwinii is a popular ornamental plant, often used in gardens and flower beds. It has a long flowering period and produces small, fragrant purple flowers. It is also used as a ground cover in shady areas and can be used to attract birds and butterflies.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Manettia irwinii has white flowers with a yellow center and a tubular shape. The seeds are small and round, and the seedlings are small and thin.
Cultivation and Propagation
Manettia irwinii can be propagated by stem cuttings or division. To propagate by stem cuttings, take a cutting that is 4-6 inches long and remove the lower leaves. Place the cutting in a moist potting mix and keep it in a warm, bright location. To propagate by division, carefully separate the root ball into two or more sections and replant each section in a separate pot. Manettia irwinii prefers a warm, humid climate and should be planted in well-draining soil in a sunny location.
