Description
Galium samothracicum (also called Samothrace Bedstraw, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia. It has a creeping habit and small white flowers. It is found in grasslands, meadows, and open woodlands.
Uses & Benefits
Galium samothracicum is used as an ornamental plant in gardens, as a ground cover, and in rock gardens. It is also used to make herbal teas and as an ingredient in herbal medicines.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flowers of Galium samothracicum are small and white, with four petals and a yellow center. The seeds are small and black, with a hard outer shell. The seedlings are slender and have small, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Galium samothracicum can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in early spring in a cold frame. Division can be done in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We suggest a soil pH of 6.5-7.5 for best results.
Where to Find Galium samothracicum
Galium samothracicum is native to Europe, Asia, and North America. It is typically found in moist, shady areas such as woodlands and meadows.
