Description

Cinchona officinalis (also called Jesuit's bark, among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the Rubiaceae family. It is native to the tropical Andean forests of western South America. It is a large shrub or small tree growing to 5–15 m tall. The leaves are opposite, oval, 7–15 cm long and 4–9 cm broad. The flowers are white, with a delicate fragrance, produced in terminal panicles. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous seeds.
