Description

Rubus echinatus (also called Bristly Raspberry, among many other common names) is a deciduous shrub native to North America. It grows to a height of 1-2 m and has arching branches with white flowers in spring. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and is often found in woodlands and hedgerows.

Cultivation and Propagation

Rubus echinatus can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a cold frame in spring or autumn. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8 cm long with a heel, can be taken in summer and planted in a cold frame. Division in spring is possible but it is best to pot up the divisions until they are established before planting out.
