Description
Aconitum aquilonare (also called northern monkshood, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and Asia. It has a tall stem with large, lobed leaves and blue, purple, or white flowers. It prefers moist, shady habitats, such as woods, meadows, and riverbanks.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Aconitum aquilonare is blue-violet, with a yellow center, and is about 2 cm in diameter. The seed is a small, black, pointed nutlet. The seedlings are small, with narrow, grass-like leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Aconitum aquilonare can be propagated by seed or division. It should be grown in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. It is hardy to USDA Zone 3 and can tolerate temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C).
