Parathesis serrulata (also called 'Serrate Parathesis', among many other common names) is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows up to 8 m tall. It is native to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is found in tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests, tropical and subtropical moist montane forests, and disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Parathesis serrulata is used as a medicinal plant in traditional Chinese medicine. It is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Parathesis serrulata is a small, white, star-shaped flower with five petals. The seeds are small, black, and round. The seedlings are small and have a single stem with a few leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Parathesis serrulata is a shrub that grows best in full sun and well-drained soils. Propagation is best done through cuttings or layering. Cuttings should be taken from semi-ripe wood and planted in a well-draining medium. Layering is done by bending a branch of the shrub to the ground and covering it with soil. The branch should be left in place until it takes root.
