Description
Maesa truncata (also called Truncate Maesa, among many other common names) is a small shrub or tree that is native to Southeast Asia. It has small, leathery leaves and small white flowers. It is found in tropical and subtropical forests, as well as in disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Maesa truncata is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a hedge plant. It is also used as a medicinal plant for treating various ailments.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Maesa truncata is white and bell-shaped, with five petals. The seed is a small, black, hard nut. The seedlings are small, with a single pair of leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Maesa truncata can be propagated by seed or division. Seed should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in early summer. Division in spring. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a lightly shaded position in a cold frame, planting them out once they are well established in the summer.
Where to Find Maesa truncata
Maesa truncata can be found in Samoa and Tonga.
