Description
Stipa pontica (also called Pontic Feathertop Grass, among many other common names) is an evergreen perennial grass native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It has thin, feathery leaves and a flowering stem that can reach up to 1 meter in height. It is found in dry grasslands, meadows, and other open habitats.
Uses & Benefits
Stipa pontica is used as an ornamental grass, for erosion control, and as a food source for livestock. Its leaves are also used in basketry.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Stipa pontica is a small, yellow-green spikelet, with awns that are up to 3 cm long. The seed is a small, dark brown grain, and the seedlings are thin and grass-like.
Cultivation and Propagation
Stipa pontica is a perennial grass that is easy to cultivate and propagate. It can be grown from seed or division. To propagate from seed, sow the seeds in a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Water the soil regularly and keep it moist. Once the seedlings have emerged, thin them out to allow for adequate space between plants. To propagate from division, dig up the clump and divide it into smaller sections. Replant the sections in the desired location and water them regularly.
Where to Find Stipa pontica
Stipa pontica is native to Europe and can be found in dry grasslands, steppes, and open woodlands.
