Description
Stipa nitens (also called Shining Needlegrass, among many other common names) is a perennial grass native to western North America, growing in dry, open woodlands, grasslands, and disturbed areas. It has thin, erect stems with narrow, linear leaves and feathery, purplish-brown flower heads.

Stipa nitens has a flower with a long, slender awn that is held in a nodding position. The seed is a small, dark brown, three-sided nutlet. The seedlings are slender and have long, narrow leaves.
