Description
Sporobolus humilis (also called Low Dropseed, among many other common names) is a perennial grass native to the United States, Mexico, and Central America. It grows in dry, sandy soils, and can be found in deserts, grasslands, and disturbed areas. It has narrow, flat leaves and grows to a height of up to 2 feet.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Sporobolus humilis has small, white flowers that are borne in clusters at the top of the stems. The seeds are small, brown and oval-shaped. The seedlings are slender and have long, narrow leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Sporobolus humilis is a warm-season grass that is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is a low-growing, clump-forming grass that grows to 12-18 inches tall and spreads by rhizomes. It is best grown in full sun and well-drained soils. Propagation is by seed or division of the rhizomes. It is drought tolerant and can be used in xeriscaping.
