Description
Setaria grandis (also called Large Foxtail, among many other common names) is an annual grass native to Africa, Asia, and Australia. It grows in a variety of habitats, from grasslands to open woodlands, and prefers moist soils.
Uses & Benefits
Setaria grandis is used as a forage crop, for erosion control, and as a soil stabilizer. It can also be used as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Setaria grandis is a small, yellow-green spikelet, while the seed is a small, dark brown caryopsis. The seedlings are thin and long with a thin, white root.
Cultivation and Propagation
Setaria grandis is a warm season grass that is easy to grow and propagate. It can be grown from seed or propagated by division. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought tolerant and can tolerate some shade. It can be mowed or left to grow naturally. It is a good choice for erosion control and can be used as a ground cover.
