Description
Schizostachyum lutescens (also called 'Lutescens', 'Lutescens Bamboo', 'Lutescens Bambu' and 'Lutescens Bambou', among many other common names) is a species of bamboo native to Southeast Asia. It is a clumping bamboo, growing up to 8 m tall with culms up to 5 cm in diameter. It grows in tropical and subtropical climates in both lowland and montane forests.
Uses & Benefits
Schizostachyum lutescens is used as an ornamental plant, for fuel, and for making furniture, flooring, and other wood products. The leaves can be used as fodder for livestock, and the plant can be used for soil conservation.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Schizostachyum lutescens has small, yellow flowers that are borne in a dense, terminal panicle. The seeds are small and black, and the seedlings have a single, unbranched stem with long, narrow leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Schizostachyum lutescens can be propagated through seeds or division. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It is drought tolerant and can tolerate temperatures down to -10°C (14°F). It can be pruned to keep it in shape.
