Description

Sasa chartacea (also called Chartaceous Bamboo, among many other common names) is a species of bamboo native to Japan and Korea. It is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial with arching stems and narrow, lance-shaped leaves. It is found in moist, shady habitats such as woodlands and thickets.

Cultivation and Propagation

Sasa chartacea can be propagated by division of the rhizomes or by seed. The rhizomes should be divided in spring or early summer and replanted immediately. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame and the seedlings transplanted to their permanent positions in late spring or early summer. The plants should be spaced about 30cm apart.
