Description
Polytoca biaurita (also called 'Hairy-Fruited Polytoca', among many other common names) is a shrub or small tree that typically grows up to 5 m tall. It is native to India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia. It is found in moist, evergreen forests and along streams and rivers.
Uses & Benefits
Polytoca biaurita is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a hedge plant. It is also used in traditional medicine for treating various ailments such as fever, headaches, and stomach aches.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Polytoca biaurita is a white, tubular flower with five petals. The seed is a small, black, ovoid seed. The seedlings are small, with a single cotyledon and a pair of opposite, simple leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Polytoca biaurita can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring or early summer in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division is best carried out in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
