Description
Piptophyllum welwitschii (also called Welwitsch's grass, among many other common names) is a perennial grass species native to Central and South America. It is found in meadows, pastures, and roadsides, and is tolerant of dry conditions.
Uses & Benefits
Piptophyllum welwitschii is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes. It is also used as a groundcover in areas with dry, sandy soil. It has a low maintenance requirement and is drought tolerant.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Piptophyllum welwitschii is a small, white flower with four petals. The seed is small, brown, and oval-shaped. The seedlings are thin and green with small, pointed leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Cultivation and propagation of Piptophyllum welwitschii can be done by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame and the seedlings transplanted when large enough to handle. Division can be done in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are established.
Where to Find Piptophyllum welwitschii
Piptophyllum welwitschii can be found in wet meadows, marshes, and other areas with standing water in Africa.
