Description
Piptochaetium tovarii (also called Tovar's grass, among many other common names) is a perennial grass species native to Central and South America. It is found in meadows, pastures, and roadsides, and is tolerant of dry conditions.
Uses & Benefits
Piptochaetium tovarii is a grass-like plant that is used in landscaping and as an ornamental plant. It is also used for erosion control and as a soil stabilizer.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Piptochaetium tovarii is a small, white to pale purple spikelet. The seed is a small, dark brown caryopsis. The seedlings are slender with a single leaf blade.
Cultivation and Propagation
Cultivation and propagation of Piptochaetium tovarii can be done by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame and the seedlings transplanted when large enough to handle. Division can be done in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are established.
Where to Find Piptochaetium tovarii
