It grows to a height of 10-30 cm and has a slender, erect stem with a few branches. The leaves are linear and flat, with a pointed tip. It is found in wet, marshy soils in open areas, such as marshes, meadows, and roadsides.
Uses & Benefits
Piptochaetium palustre has been used for erosion control, as a soil stabilizer, and as a forage grass for livestock.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Piptochaetium palustre is a small, white to pale purple spikelet. The seed is a small, dark brown caryopsis. The seedlings are slender with a single leaf blade.
Cultivation and Propagation
Piptochaetium palustre is a perennial grass native to the Southwestern United States and Mexico. It grows in dry, sunny areas and is tolerant of drought and heat. Propagation is best done by seed, which should be planted in the spring. The seed should be lightly covered with soil and kept moist until germination. Once established, the plant can be divided to create new plants.
