Description
Panicum calliphyllum (also called Panic grass, among many other common names) is an annual or perennial grass with erect stems, growing up to 1.2 m tall. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, and is found in open habitats such as grasslands and savannas.
Uses & Benefits
Panicum calliphyllum is used as a forage crop for livestock, as well as for soil conservation and erosion control. It is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flowers of Panicum calliphyllum are small and inconspicuous, with a single spikelet per stem. The seeds are small and black, with a thin, papery seed coat. Seedlings have a single, long, narrow leaf that is light green in color.
Cultivation and Propagation
Panicum calliphyllum is a perennial grass that grows in clumps and can reach up to 3 feet in height. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation is done through seed or division. Seeds should be sown in the spring and kept moist until germination. Division can be done in the spring or fall by digging up the clump and dividing it into smaller sections.
Where to Find Panicum calliphyllum
Panicum calliphyllum can be found in wet meadows, marshes, and other wet areas in the United States and Canada.
