Description

Guadua sarcocarpa (also called Sarcocarpous Guadua, among many other common names) is a perennial grass native to South America. It grows in wet, open woodlands and grasslands, and has a tufted growth habit with long, linear leaves. The flower heads are small and yellow, and the seeds are enclosed in a papery sheath.

Guadua sarcocarpa is used for making furniture, musical instruments, and construction materials. It is also used for erosion control and as a windbreak.

Cultivation and Propagation

Guadua sarcocarpa is a clumping bamboo native to Colombia and Venezuela. It is a very hardy species and can tolerate temperatures down to -15°C (5°F). Propagation is by division of the clumps or by seed. The seed should be sown in spring in a warm, sunny spot and kept moist. Germination usually takes place within 2-3 weeks.
