Description
Echinochloa chacoensis (also called 'Chaco barnyardgrass', among many other common names) is an annual grass that grows to a height of 0.5-1.5 m. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America. It is commonly found in moist, open areas such as floodplains, marshes, and disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Echinochloa chacoensis is used as a forage crop for livestock, as a soil stabilizer, and as a source of biomass for energy production.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Echinochloa chacoensis is yellow, with a white center, and is borne in a terminal raceme. The seed is small, dark brown, and has a short, curved tail. The seedling is a small, upright, grass-like plant with a short, thin stem.
Cultivation and Propagation
Echinochloa chacoensis is a species of grasses that can be cultivated by planting the seeds in a shallow bed of moist soil. The seeds should be covered with a thin layer of soil and kept moist until they germinate. Once the seedlings have emerged, they should be transplanted into a larger bed of soil or compost. The grasses can be propagated by collecting the young shoots from the bed and transferring them to a new bed.
